New York Times  Obama, Vague on Issues, Pleases Crowds in Europe Many Europeans see Barack Obama’s candidacy as a sign of hope for a more flexible, less ideological America. Governments and politicians are not so sure.

DAVID BROOKS Playing Innocent Abroad It will take politics and power to address challenges, the two factors that dare not speak their name in Barack Obama’s lofty peroration in Berlin.

"Closing Time: Assessing the Iranian Threat to the Strait of Hormuz"  International Security Summer 2008 Caitlin Talmadge (pdf 158k) How might Iran retaliate in the aftermath of a limited Israeli or U.S. strike? Iran   could halt or impede traffic in the Strait of Hormuz for a month or more. U.S. attempts to reopen the waterway likely would escalate rapidly into sustained, large-scale air and naval operations during which Iran could impose significant economic and military costs on the United States—even if Iranian operations were not successful in truly closing the strait. The aftermath of limited strikes on Iran would be complicated and costly.

America's New Global Challenge By: Ivo Daalder and Anne-Marie Slaughter | The Boston Globe
As Barack Obama travels abroad this week, he is finding a world that still wants America to be engaged, but no longer necessarily waits for America to take the lead. The challenge for the next president is to understand how much has changed and how America can best pursue its national interests in such a different international environment

Financial Times World must look to Europe as capitalisms clash

The Continent could play a big role in shaping the new economic order if it could only marshal its forces effectively. The 27-member EU is now the world’s biggest economy thanks to enlargement and the euro’s strength, says John Thornhill

Gazprom and Russia's Energy Imperialism By: Michael J. Economides and Nate Evans | World Politics Review    An ogre of a giant looms to the east of Europe, occasionally in the shape of a country, other times in the shape of a company, the two often indistinguishable. Russia and Gazprom are poised to devour the whole of Europe and its Asian neighbors

China and Russia’s Geographic Divide By: Peter Zeihan | 1913 Intel  China has a booming manufacturing economy, while Russia boasts growing exports of raw materials. But a closer look at the geography of the two paints a very different picture, while the history of the two tells an extraordinarily different story. If anything, it is no small miracle that the two have never found themselves facing each other in a brutal war.

Asia Times For Iran, respect above all else Iranian leaders have placed clear emphasis on the importance of the respect displayed by representatives of the countries dealing with Tehran's nuclear portfolio, including the United States. This goes to the heart of the difficulties in dealing with Iran, and offers a path that could lead to unexpected breakthroughs, including Tehran's ties with Israel. - Kaveh L Afrasiabi

Asia Times CHAN AKYA
A Turkish theater for World War III Turkey has been sold to the Saudis at a bargain price for Riyadh's assistance to the George W Bush administration in pushing down the price of oil ahead of the United States presidential elections this year. The path chosen is the same as that used to turn Pakistan into a breeding ground for terrorists, with an accelerated timetable in keeping with a preset script. Around the corner, a civilizational war beckons.

Al-Qaeda hostage plot suspected
A Turkish radical group and al-Qaeda are believed to be behind the July 9 attack on the United States consulate in Istanbul. The official line is that the joint operation was either a hit-and-run or a suicide mission. But details now emerging indicate a plan to occupy the consulate and take hostages, pointing to a possible new trend

Keep an Eye on Those Kurds - Marc Lynch, Abu Aardvark  Keep an eye on the special meeting of the Kurdish Parliament called for today over Kurdish outrage over the Kirkuk provisions in the just-passed provincial elections law, which Kurdish leadership is calling a "coup against the Constitution." The Kurdish bloc is calling for a re-vote, which might make sense but would be of dubious legality. Some (overly excitable?) Arab and Iraqi reports suggest that in addition to Talabani vetoing the provincial election law (over which the Kurds walked out of Parliament) the Kurds could pull out of Maliki's government and potentially even bring it down.
